Biography

Coming together in Ikebukuro during 2006, バックドロップシンデレラ (BackDrop Cinderella) have gone from strength to strength. The members comprise of (from left to right) 豊島”ペリー来航”渉 (Toshima “perī raikō” Wataru) [Guitar and Vocal], 鬼ヶ島一徳 (Onigashima Ittoku) [Drums and Chorus], アサヒキャナコ(Asahi Kyanako) [Bass and Chorus], and でんでけあゆみ (Dendeke Ayumi) [Vocals]. In 2011, the group launched their own record label NaturalAfroRecord to become fully independent and self-produced. In their 12 year career they have released an impressive 7 albums, 3 mini albums, and a cover album, with a 4th mini-album set to be released in October 2019. That’s a lot of music! At present they are yet to perform in the UK, which is a shame from the live videos I have seen but hopefully that will change soon!

Sound

I think there is one word that can capture BackDrop Cinderella’s sound, manic. It’s hard to confine them to a genre as they truly incorporate a range of different styles and it even varies between songs. The main genre they tend to go for is ska, off beat rhythm and constant vocal. However, there can be metal features such as screaming vocals, or more complex guitar riffs, or even punk with gang vocals and a more straight forward riff pattern. The odd track even features violin in the mix! Indeed, I find it hard to describe their sound as it is so varied but the core ska sound to it brings it all together so it doesn’t sound too different.

What helps a lot with the versatility is the fact that every member can provide vocals. Indeed their different vocals come in to play to different strength of the different styles. For me, their sound is truly free. It comes across that they make what ever music they desire to make and has a real fun vibe that I can’t get enough of. It really translates well live. From the videos I’ve seen the crowd get swept away and it creates a fun atmosphere. I really hope they bring this over to our shores someday. In particular, I’d love to see them at a music festival as they have that sound that anyone can enjoy!

Unfortunately only their first mini album, From the Brain, and their second album, Nippon Impossible, under their name written in Japanese and their first album Picyon Impossible under their English name, are available digitally on iTunes. Everything else has to be imported!
