DAOKO started gaining attention when she was only 15 years old! From the Tokyo area, her music was spreading from her uploads to Nico Nico Douga (Japanese video sharing site). Since this debut, she has gone on to release 6 albums, and 3 EPs, some of these are on her current major record label, Toy’s Factory. Her songs have also been used in anime such as Shinken no Bahamut VIRGIN SOUL, Fireworks, etc. At this point, she is yet to tour outside of Japan but with how her career is going, we hope she will make the trip sometime soon.
Where rap is usually is primarily confrontational, DAOKO’s style is more trance like which is pretty surreal to listen to at first but for me it’s this that makes DAOKO special. Not only does she rap, she also sings. Her singing style is typical J-Pop and it works with the aesthetic of her sound. Again, like with other vocalists, her instrumentals are typically toned down. For DAOKO they are all electronic drums and synths. They are programmed to fit with the trance feel but instead of feeling like a backing track that is sung over, it is more incorporated within the sound. For someone so young, it is cool her instrumentals have a hint of more 80’s techno-pop, instead of being the usual modern electronic. It’s abundantly clear that DAOKO is a very special artist, putting a twist on the rap and electronic genres creating something new.
This is where it gets more interesting, the trance aspect is incorporated into her live performance. How I hear you ask? It is an interesting concept as DAOKO blends into the backdrop. This is done via projector and incredible practice! It is a true spectacle to see as on paper it looks like something that doesn’t work but it is quite a sight behold. This works with the trance like sound, adding a nice dimension making the live performance an artistic experience over just a live show. It is for this reason we really hope she makes a UK appearance to show off this live show at our venues!
