Biography

Originating from the Saga prefecture, Kanoe Rana has been making music since she was 14. Her rise to fame began when she started to post music videos on Twitter in 2015, fast forward 2 years and she is now signed to major label Warner Music Japan with 5 mini-albums, 1 full album and a remix album in her discography. Impressive considering 2 were independent! At the present she has not played outside of Japan but hopefully as she continues to grow she will grace the UK with her presence with a few live shows.

Sound

As a singer songwriter, the drive of the songs comes from her vocals and acoustic guitar. With this at the base, extra instruments are added to bolster it up. Typically it goes for a more rock feel, with drums, distorted bass and electric guitar. Sometimes there can be synths or orchestral instruments thrown into the mix. This is something she throws herself into, creating a nice range of songs allowing her to push her sound on all fronts. Instrumentally, it is more about creating rhythms than melodies. The odd song may have the an instrument solo, but the songs are more about the lyrics.

Lyric wise, the songs tend to focus on everyday life or inspired by anime. Typically as Kanoe Rana describes herself as quite a shy person, some of the songs deal with her daily struggles. A prime example is Tokyo, which is about her adjusting to city life. Despite the language barrier, the song’s meanings are alluded to via the tone of the vocals. The raw emotions are brought across through the power and delicate melodies, although sometimes she has a bit of fun, including a bit of rap on Human Missile. It’s truly unique as her music opposes her shy persona, showing it to be a method of expressing herself minus the nerves. Already in her short career she has shown her masterful songwriting skills, which can only grow from here.
